What Is E-Mixing?

Over the last couple of years e-mixing has become more and more popular within the film and TV industry. With faster upload/download times being offered by ISP’s and file and media hosts offering blazingly fast services allowing huge file transfers, it has never been easier (or cheaper) to exchange data across the web.

E-mixing, also known as "remote" mixing has become accepted by many post production professionals as a way to cut costs, increase productivity and simplify work flow while maintaining the same high quality audio mix they expect for their productions. If you are involved in producing reality, documentary or scripted programming you could really benefit from e-mixing.

Whether you live, work or are editing your production in another city, state or even another country, the process is simple and seamless.

How It Works

  • Step 1) The first thing I’ll need from you are the network specs. This tells me how to set up my session. Things like audio configurations for the stereo or 5.1 mix and stems along with technical info that I will need to set mix levels.
  • Step 2) Once your show has been approved and locked you will need to output an OMF so that the audio can be imported into ProTools for mixing. Please visit our Tech Help pages or contact me if you need any specific details on this. Next you will need to output a Quicktime video which also contains your rough audio mix and has a timecode window burn.
  • Step 3) When you have completed your outputs, upload them onto a file hosting website such as Hightail or WeTransfer. Once uploaded, an email containing the download link is sent to me. You should also email me any notes you may have regarding the mix. After the files are downloaded, usually in about 30 to 40 minutes, I'm all set and ready to go.
  • Step 4) After I complete my mix I will send you back a reference quicktime via Hightail with the mixed audio for you to review. Email me back a list of your notes on the mix with each note listed by timecode number.
  • Step 5) If you have been doing any additional work on the video during the time I’ve been mixing then you will need to send me a new quicktime of the AIR MASTER so I can make any adjustments necessary to fix possible sync errors.
  • Step 6) The final step is for me to output the stereo or 5.1 mix along with all the required stems, usually M&E, dialog, sfx and music. Once that is done I will upload a folder containing all the files and you’ll then receive an email with a download link.
  • Step 7) When you have downloaded the files simply import them into your sequence using the timecode start time noted in the email. All the tracks are set at 0dB and will play back at unity. Now your ready to do your final lay off.

E-mixing takes full advantage of modern file sharing technology. Call or email today to get a bid on your production.

What's New?

New Gear!

Izotope RX7 Advanced

The works! Just in time to make use of Ambience Match & Match EQ on some new shows. This is the defacto standard for audio restoration and it just got a whole lot better!

Audio Ease Altiverb 7

The premiere convolution reverb now in up to 7.1 channels. This thing is sick! Just amazing on dialogue localization anywhere from a closet to a concert hall. Indespensable!

ProTools 12.6

Loving the new features in this latest version! Clip effects especially is a welcomed addition and enhances workflow no end when working on clip based audio post projects.

SSD All The Way!

Updated all drives to super fast SSD. These new Oyen Digital drives are blazingly fast and quite sexy (for a drive) I might add!!

Little Alter Boy

New pitch change plug-in from SoundToys. Sounds amazing and I've put it to good use on 8 Minutes, a new A&E series I'm mixing. I tried out everything available and this one sounded the best by far.

Unveil from Zynaptiq allows attenuating or boosting reverb components within a mixed signal. An almost magical plug-in that helps clean up dialog recorded in reverberant rooms such as hallways and bathrooms. Now thanks to Zynaptic you really can un-bake the cake!

Izotope RX5 is finaly here and it's an amazingly powerfull tool for all your noise reduction needs. I've been using it a lot in my work lately and loving the new GUI, it's faster and easier to use than ever! As they say; "The repair tool of choice for industry professionals, who save time every day transforming flawed audio into mesmerizing media".
